If you know what to look for, the medals and ribbons on a military uniform read like a book that tells the story of service. If you don’t know, the myriad of colors and stripes can be a very confusing read.
There is one that stands out, though.
First called the Badge of Military Merit, it was established on 7 Aug 1782 by General George Washington as a meritorious service award. This makes it the oldest award that is still active today. It has since evolved into an award for only those who pay the highest prices for their country and their fellow servicemembers. The distinction, in case you do not know, is set aside for those who had their blood shed in enemy action.
It has another name now, though: The Purple Heart.
This award, which knows no rank restriction, has long been a symbol of the utmost valor. From the first recipients William Brown and Elijah Churchill to Douglas MacArthur and beyond to Cordelia “Betty” Cook and John F. Kennedy, it has commanded respect for the living and the fallen.
We at Regiment salute all recipients of this most storied award. Thank you all for your sacrifice.
We will not forget. We have your six.
