On this day 3 years ago, a day that weighs heavy on a lot of veterans hearts. Whether you fought and bled there or lost a brother, sister, son, daughter this day is as prolific as some of the bloodiest battles in Afghanistan. I am of course talking about the Abbey 13. This subject is near and dear to our hearts at Regiment. Our own Chris Earl served with some of the KIA. We have others that were there but manning other gates or in some form or fashion helping the withdrawal.
On 26 August 2021, at 17:50 local time (13:20 UTC ), during the evacuation of Afghanistan at Hamid Karzai International Airport. A suicide bomber killed183 people, including 170 Afghan civilians and 13 members of the United States military, 11 Marines, 1 Navy Corpsman, 1 Soldier. I will never forget the images that I saw. A horrific hellscape being broadcasted to the world akin to 9/11.
From everyone here at Regiment, we give our most heartfelt sorry for your loss, and to the families of the 1,833 Killed in Action may you never feel burden again.
